9 Reasons to Visit Montgomery, AL.
I’ve traveled abroad at least a dozen times in the past few years. I’ve visited exotic destinations, learned about different cultures and met some amazing people from around the world. During my explorations, it dawned on me that I’ve never really taken the time to really know the U.S. Most of us dream about holidays on tropical islands, European tours, and adventures in places with beautiful names and accents that are far away, but rarely do we think about what’s in our own backyards.
While I’m definitely grateful for the chance to see the other side of the coin, I also wanted to spend time learning more about the U.S. So, I ventured south...and the road lead me to none other than Alabama. Here are nine reasons to visit Montgomery, AL at least once in your life.
THE History.
It’s no secret that Montgomery has a rich history. Not only was this city the capital of the Confederate States of America, but it was also the primary site for the Civil Rights Movement, which shaped the course of American history.
Visiting the Rosa Parks Museum was an especially chilling experience. We all know the story about The Mother of the Civil Rights Movement, but standing there and reading about how the actions of one woman made such a difference in the whole country was a humbling and extraordinary experience.
History buffs should definitely take time to explore the Legacy Museum, the Freedom Rides Museum. and the Civil Rights Memorial in downtown Montgomery.
THE Theatre.
If you know me at all, you know that the theater is basically my favorite thing ever (outside of dogs, Captain America and pizza, of course). That being said, one of the things I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Alabama is the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.
Even if you’re not hung up on musicals and plays, I can basically promise that seeing a show here will have you smiling from ear-to-ear. From some of the renowned classics like Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Comedy of Errors to other significant plays like Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat, the theater will give you access to a world filled with wonder and awe.
THE Culture.
You might be surprised to learn that Montgomery actually has one of the biggest art scenes in all of America. The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts has a collection of some of the most inspiring decorative arts, as well as regional paintings and sculptures. Not to mention that some of the greatest musicians of all time once called Montgomery their home. Nat King Cole, Melvin Franklin, and Big Mama Thornton are just a few names that found inspiration in the great state of Alabama.
THE Sports.
Although I’m not a big sports fan, I do like to occasionally express my support for local clubs. Montgomery is the home of the Montgomery Biscuits baseball team and was also the place that hosted the National Baseball Championship some years ago. While it’s definitely not the Super Bowl, Montgomery also organized plenty of other sporting events, mainly focused on teams from the local colleges and universities.
THE Food.
Are you really surprised to find food on this list? I mean come on, we all know that Southerners make some of the most soulful foods in all of the U.S ...and probably the world. I’m writing a whole different post about my favorite restaurants in Montgomery that can help guide you through some of the most scrumptious seafood specialties, hearty desserts and of course - beer and wine.
I was lucky enough to attend the 5th Annual MAX Burger Bash when I was in Montgomery and I’m basically still dreaming about all of the best burgers in the city. This was hands-down one of my favorite experiences with the locals on Lower Dexter Avenue. The Burger Bash is a competition style cook-off where you are the judge - that means you get to sample all of the most mouth-watering burgers Montgomery has to offer (+ a seemingly never-ending supply of beer) in the course of one fun-filled evening and cast your vote. Let’s just say that Montgomery has a very special place in my heart after that evening.
THE Cityscape.
Strolling around Montgomery is something like stepping back in time. The whole city is a mish-mash of old 19-century Confederate buildings and revitalized and urban sites and landmarks. Old Alabama Town is by far one of my favorite places in Montgomery, shortly followed by the modern Riverfront which has some of the most amazing spots on the Alabama River.
Montgomery is also one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S. and has been recognized for its urbanism projects aimed at improving and restoring the city to new extents.
THE Weather.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll be happy to learn that Montgomery is a summer lover’s dream. The weather is hot and humid throughout the year, with very short winters, so you don’t really need to pack anything more than a pair of shorts and tees. What’s better than never-ending summer? Nothing, I say. Absolutely nothing. Go ahead and kick back with a huge glass of sweet tea.
the Work.
While the primary reason for my visit was tourism and exploration, I’ve had the chance to talk to some locals about the general state of things in Montgomery. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Montgomery is, in fact, a growing economy and many people are considering taking up work in the Southern capital. So, if you’re looking for some job opportunities, Alabama might be the next best choice.
the southern charm.
The community in Montgomery, Alabama is definitely something else. If I had to choose my favorite thing about this place then it would definitely be the people. Warm, kind and hospitable, the people of Montgomery are some of the sweetest souls on the planet. I met some of the kindest people in Alabama and was really blown away by how welcoming every person I met was. The whole community differs so much from what I’ve encountered in big cities like NYC or LA. Compared to some other metropolitan areas and fast-paced cities I’ve visited, Montgomery was a true breath of fresh air.
Montgomery, AL is definitely one of the places you need to visit if you're looking for a breather and a rest from the bustling busy life.
